WordPress blogs: Quick tip on wordpress org and com searches

I have found this very useful while searching for stuff for wordpress com (for myself) and for org (for wifey).
Quick tip: When wanting to search for one, say com, type -org at the end and vice versa.
To further filter, you could use php, plugins as well.

E.g. I want to search for: show calendar on wordpress blog

For com blogs: show calendar on wordpress blog com -org
Further filter: show calendar on wordpress blog com -org -plugins -php

For org: show calendar on wordpress blog org -com
(usually searches are valid for self-hosted blogs – org)

WordPress blogs: Google adsense

On a good sunday afternoon, I finally decided to sign up to Google’s adSense. They sent me a mail that they would take some time to approve ! Was surprised since google usually wants people in its domain as of yesterday. Anyways, within a couple of hours, it was approved, and I decided to try it out.

I am on a wordpress “com” site and I cannot install plugins. So there is no way I can enable adsense here. Lots of searches have shown I can do this using a text widget – it simply doesn’t work. My guess is wordpress in one of its recent updates, decided to stripe out the scripting code from the editors. I might move to wordpress org when my snaps are of bigger interest (when I am taking them).

Twenty ten theme is a recent theme launched by wordpress. The same theme is on this blog – as of posting date
Wifey wants the same theme on her wordpress blog.
Sadly her blog is using wordpress org ( lookup in wordpress for the differences between wordpress com and org) and its on 2.9.2 version. This theme is only available on 3.0+ versions, and 3.0 is available only in a beta phase.

I can manually download the wordpress org 3.0 beta and upload that to her hosted server, but I haven’t done that before, and I am not sure if all the data would be lost. So I will probably wait for when 3.0 is available as a general availability release and just hit upgrade on that server.
